Big Tuna’s History
The Saints soon to be suspended head coach, Sean Payton, has reached out to his long-time mentor and friend, Bill Parcells. The Saints need a head coach this season and Payton thinks Parcells would be a good fit. Parcells has not coached since 2006 when he ended a four-year stint with the Cowboys and announced his retirement. Still, it wouldn’t be anything new if he were to make a comeback. Peter King has noticed a pattern.
“This is my last coaching job, without question.”— Parcells, upon taking his second head-coaching job, in New England. (January 21, 1993)
“I’m not going to coach any more football games. This definitely is the end of my coaching career.”— Parcells, resigning as the head coach of the New York Jets. (January 3, 2000)
“You can write this on your little chalkboard — I’m not coaching again.”— Parcells, after spurning an offer from Tampa Bay to succeed Tony Dungy (January 11, 2002)
“I’m retiring from coaching football … It’s time to stop. I just have to let it go.”— Parcells, announcing he would not return to coach the Dallas Cowboys. (January 22, 2007)

  3. Saints' Sean Payton Suspended 1 Year For Bounty Scandal; Gregg Williams Suspended Indefinitely →

    The NFL came down hard on the Saints for their role in the bounty scandal. Head coach Sean Payton has been suspended a full year, defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has been suspended indefinitely and GM Mickey Loomis has been suspended eight games and fined $500,000. The team itself has also been fined $500,000 and will forfeit second-round picks in 2012 and 2013.

  5. We don’t need Tebow. We sell out every home game. Let him go to Jacksonville Tampa or Miami. Our Wildcat offense can be run by (Jeremy) Kerley or Joe McKnight. We have Mark Sanchez and just signed Drew (Stanton). Mark has taken us to 2 AFC championship games. We need to build on the team we have now.

  6. Breaking news from SB Nation: Peyton Manning Will Reportedly Sign With Broncos  →

    After weeks of nonstop speculation, the decision has been made. Peyton Manning will be joining the Denver Broncos. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported the news on Monday morning.

    The Broncos were one of three known finalists along with the Tennessee Titans and San Francisco 49ers. There were no clear leaders in the race for Manning, but Denver-based reporters have been saying for more than a week now that the Broncos are the most likely destination.

“You sneaky mom!”
Per Schefter & Mortensen at the four-letter, details have come out that the San Francisco 49ers have snuck their way into the running for free agent QB Peyton Manning.
Details include:
Peyton has already worked out for them at Duke.
Niners were so impressed, that they flew their team physicians out immediately for tests and a physical.
In light of the Niners interest, the Arizona Cardinals have been told that they should proceed as though Manning will not be available to them.
Thus, the Cardinals have now tendered QB Kevin Kolb for $7 Million rather than release him to save the money.
Officially 3 teams are now in the running: Niners, Tennessee Titans, & Denver Broncos.
Broncos GM John Elway checked out Peyton throw today and liked what he saw.
This might explain why the Niners have yet to re-sign veteran QB Alex Smith and maybe even why they signed WR Randy Moss.
What do you think of these new details and how do you think it all plays out?

  8. Lessons From the First Day of Free Agency

    mcnabborkolb:

    Todd Herremans

    Day one of free agency is in the books, and it was an interesting, if not groundbreaking day for Eagles fans. Let’s break down what we’ve learned so far.

    * * *

    A rebirth of the old Eagles way? The team took the first day to negotiate extensions for two of its longest-tenured players, Todd Herremans and Trent Cole. It was a nice return to the days pre-2009 when the Eagles built mostly from within. It’s also an important precedent to set with the players. Basically since Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown were unceremoniously dumped, the front office and the players have had a relationship built on animosity and mistrust. Young players like DeSean Jackson have battled with the organization rather than sign mutually-beneficial long-term deals.

    Jonathan Tamari has the money quote from Todd Herremans: “The Eagles have been known for a while as a team that doesn’t take care of their draft picks and pays everyone else’s as picks and players. I think they’re trying to change that stigma that they have.”

    By showing that you can get more money by playing the good soldier and dealing with your contract issues behind the scenes, the Eagles made a big step toward repairing that relationship and establishing veteran role models for the less experienced players to look up to.

    * * *

    Wide receivers are getting paid. Three of the best wide receivers on the market signed yesterday. Vincent Jackson went to Tampa Bay, getting 5 years, $55.55 million, with $26 million guaranteed. Marques Colston stayed with the Saints at the last minute, for 5 years, $40 million and $19 million guaranteed. Finally, Pierre Garçon stole 5 years, $42.5 million and $21.5 million guaranteed from the Redskins.

    Seem of these numbers are artificially inflated in the final years, but DeSean Jackson and Drew Rosenhaus have to be looking at those guarantees and salivating.

    * * *

    Free agency for the Eagles is 85% about linebacker. And nothing happened on that front yet. Curtis Lofton, Stephen Tulloch, and David Hawthorne are all still available, and until those dominos start falling we won’t be able to judge the Eagles front office one way or another.

    * * *

    If I ever became an NFL general manager, I would have to remember one thing: don’t sign second-tier free agents on the first day. If you need to move fast on the biggest name out there, that’s fine. But don’t throw big money at guys who aren’t major difference-makers. That’s known as the Redskins’ strategy.

All the talk will be about “Elite” Eli, Coughlin the Coach, even Mario Manningham’s magnificent grab, & deservedly so, but take a moment to consider Mark Herzlich & his journey.
He beat cancer, after being told to forget football & maybe even walking ever again. He went undrafted. When the NFL returned from it’s lockout, he chose to sign with the Giants, making the squad out of training camp. While he may have been inactive tonight, as his teammates won the Lombardi trophy, there is no doubt that his life’s story can be defined by just one word tonight.
