1. Yankees deny team is for sale →

From the New York Daily News:

Multiple baseball and finance sources told the Daily News they are hearing that the team the Steinbrenner family has led to seven World Series titles could be put on the block in the wake of the record sale price of $2.175 billion the Los Angeles Dodgers went for in April.

“There has been chatter all around the banking and financial industries in the city for a couple of weeks now,” one high-level baseball source told The News.

Naturally, as you might expect from reports like this, there are denials from the team:

Yankee president Randy Levine adamantly denied the rumors: “I can say to you there is absolutely, positively nothing to this. The Steinbrenners are not selling the team.”

    On Mariano

    jeffbaum:

I am not a Yankee fan. I am a Mets fan.

It is often said that what separates the Yankees, and Yankee fans from other baseball fans (Mets fans, in particular) is that they see the Yankees as bigger than the sport of baseball. If you go to the new Yankee Stadium, you are not there to watch a baseball game, you are there to watch a Yankee game. They built the stadium to emphasize this. You will never forget that it’s the Yankee brand first, and baseball second. I bet few Yankee fans would even disagree with this.

So, when I heard that Mariano Rivera blew out his knee during his pregame routine of shagging fly balls in the outfield, it was the first time in a long while where something bad happened to the Yankees and my first instinct wasn’t a “serves them right” smirk or a feeling of self satisfaction. I was genuinely bummed to hear the news. If the Yankees are bigger than baseball, Rivera was bigger than the Yankees. He was a part of the New York sports landscape for half of my life, and it will be weird not having that inevitable constant any longer.

I wish him the very best in his retirement, and the Yankees nothing but pain and heartbreak trying to find a replacement, so that their fans will finally realize how unrealistically good they had it for the last 15 years.

Mariano is one of the few players that I think transcend the team they play for. He’s a baseball legend. I am a Mets fan as well and was disappointed to hear about his injury. I sincerely hope the best for him.

On a dreary, drizzly Oakland evening, the 2nd annual Bacon Tuesday sponsored by Jeff Francoeur went down, all stemming from Frenchy tossing a baseball wrapped in a $100 bill to be used for the purchase of pork products last season.

I think I can now officially forgive Jeff Francoeur for his past OBP transgressions and freely admit that I am a rabid Francoeur supporter. Click through for the whole video

The Dodgers are unveiling the Big Kid Dog, a hot dog covered in Mac ‘N Cheese and Fritos. Assuming the rain holds up and I make it to Chavez Ravine on Wednesday night, I will be consuming this beast. You know, for research.
And if you don’t see me the next day, at least know that I died of a massive coronary while trying to get out of the parking lot.

“I get the ball, I throw the ball, and then I take a shower.”— Mariano Rivera

Mariano Rivera is a strike throwing, shower taking machine. Last year, his 17th year in the majors, Mariano struck out 60, had a .9 WHIP and minuscule 1.91 ERA. Much to the chagrin of the rest of the AL East, Rivera is ready to have another classic Mo type of year at the ripe old age of 92. He cannot be stopped.
