  4. The potential rise and return of “El Niño”

    afootballreport:

    By Dominic Vieira

He’s sharp, lighting fast and killer inside the box; those words could have easily been used to describe Fernando Torres throughout his Atletico Madrid days, under Benitez at Anfield, or whilst representing Spain at Euro 2008. But since knee surgery in mid April 2010, amongst other issues, Torres’ progression as a world class striker has stalled and regressed.

Having seen the Spaniard play in Lisbon last week against Benfica, I saw a determined and energetic Torres who tormented from start to finish. In addition, he’s sporting his glorious blonde hair once more which reminded me of the electrifying Torres who played against Benfica 2 years ago. The striker was close to scoring a trademark goal in the first half after zig-zagging through the defence. Torres was a constant threat as Chelsea played with a rapid counter-attacking approach and in the second half he powered down the left flank to assist Kalou with a goal which has given his side a vital advantage in the quarter-final.

His confidence is growing and it was evident once again against Aston Villa this weekend, Di Matteo has also noticed a transformation and told the press: “He’s enjoying his playing, he’s got a smile on his face.” The 28 year old assisted Ivanovic in the 83rd and finished the match off by scoring a typical goal. Torres appears to be returning to his notorious form at an important stage in the season.  I hope he is, but consistency is necessary. Or how else will he ensure a place in this summer’s Euro 2012?

Big Tuna’s History
The Saints soon to be suspended head coach, Sean Payton, has reached out to his long-time mentor and friend, Bill Parcells. The Saints need a head coach this season and Payton thinks Parcells would be a good fit. Parcells has not coached since 2006 when he ended a four-year stint with the Cowboys and announced his retirement. Still, it wouldn’t be anything new if he were to make a comeback. Peter King has noticed a pattern.
“This is my last coaching job, without question.”— Parcells, upon taking his second head-coaching job, in New England. (January 21, 1993)
“I’m not going to coach any more football games. This definitely is the end of my coaching career.”— Parcells, resigning as the head coach of the New York Jets. (January 3, 2000)
“You can write this on your little chalkboard — I’m not coaching again.”— Parcells, after spurning an offer from Tampa Bay to succeed Tony Dungy (January 11, 2002)
“I’m retiring from coaching football … It’s time to stop. I just have to let it go.”— Parcells, announcing he would not return to coach the Dallas Cowboys. (January 22, 2007)

“You sneaky mom!”
Per Schefter & Mortensen at the four-letter, details have come out that the San Francisco 49ers have snuck their way into the running for free agent QB Peyton Manning.
Details include:
Peyton has already worked out for them at Duke.
Niners were so impressed, that they flew their team physicians out immediately for tests and a physical.
In light of the Niners interest, the Arizona Cardinals have been told that they should proceed as though Manning will not be available to them.
Thus, the Cardinals have now tendered QB Kevin Kolb for $7 Million rather than release him to save the money.
Officially 3 teams are now in the running: Niners, Tennessee Titans, & Denver Broncos.
Broncos GM John Elway checked out Peyton throw today and liked what he saw.
This might explain why the Niners have yet to re-sign veteran QB Alex Smith and maybe even why they signed WR Randy Moss.
What do you think of these new details and how do you think it all plays out?
