    fuckyeanba: The people at Dime asked: who is more versatile, LeBron James or Magic Johnson?  As someone that was born in that hazy space between Generation X and Generation Y/Millennial/Echo Boomers/Generation We/Net Generation, I actually remember watching Magic Johnson play towards the end of his career, and I have still more vivid memories of him with the Dream Team.  I also remember watching LeBron James’ first game with the Cavaliers when I was in college; it dawned on me at the time of that first game, I was older than he was.  Age, more than any sort of proficiency with analytics or understanding of basketball, colored this breakdown and can probably be stratified along the same generational basis that leads my old man to proclaim, ”There’s still no one that’s been better than Russell.” We, as basketball fans, are inextricably tied to our generation. For me, there will never be anyone near as good as Michael Jordan; the discussion of others in the same breath is a non-starter for any of my basketball watching peers. Perhaps, if his assault on the history books continues, LeBron will hold that place for the current generation of basketball fans. But for now, for my age bracket, it’s a constant reaffirmation of “you had to be there.”
